There are <strong>cemeteries<\/strong> in the world that have gained some <strong>fame<\/strong> and interest from travelers because of <strong>famous people buried<\/strong> in them, the best examples are the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/P%C3%A8re_Lachaise_Cemetery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris<\/a> (this is where Marie Curie, Voltaire or Jim Morrison are buried among others) or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/La_Recoleta_Cemetery\">La\u00a0Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires<\/a> which most people visit to see the tomb of Eva Per\u00f3n, better known as Evita.<\/p>\n<p>However, there are many other <strong>cemeteries<\/strong> which are just like an <strong>open-air museum<\/strong> and it is really worth dedicating some time to them. We present the <strong>Poblenou Cemetery<\/strong> in <strong>Barcelona<\/strong>, which was opened in the 18<sup>th<\/sup> century. The cemetery hasn\u2019t had an \u201ceasy life\u201d, as it was destroyed by Napoleon\u2019s army and existed in the ignorance of the city, especially since the opening of the Montju\u00efc Cemetery. Recently things start to change and in 2004 a <strong>route of cemeteries<\/strong> was created, which include this<strong> hidden gem of the city<\/strong> as well.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-237\" title=\"Entrance Poblenou Cemetery \" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.surfingtheplanet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2014\/02\/Entrance-Cemetery-Poble-Nou.jpg?strip=all&resize=1000%2C667\" alt=\"Entrance Poblenou Cemetery \" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><br \/>\nThe actual structure of the <em>Poblenou Cemetery<\/em> was designed by Ginesi, an Italian architect in the 1800s, and the cemetery of Pisa served as model for the construction. The cemetery has <strong>two main parts<\/strong>, and the section closer to the entrance is a complex with<strong> thousands of burial niches<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-232\" title=\"Niches in Poble Nou Cemetery\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.surfingtheplanet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2014\/02\/Niches-in-Poble-Nou-Cemetery.jpg?strip=all&resize=1000%2C664\" alt=\"Niches in Poble Nou Cemetery\" width=\"1000\" height=\"664\" \/><br \/>\nIf we head to the part in the back of the Poblenou Cemetery, we will find <strong>individual crypts and mausolea<\/strong>\u00a0where many of the most <strong>important members of the Catalan bourgeoisie<\/strong> are buried. The long list of people (whose presence was important in the evolution of the city and are buried here) includes among others the manufacturer family Bonaplata, Narc\u00eds Monturiol the famous engineer, the politician Valent\u00ed Almirall or the novelist Narc\u00eds Oller.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-231\" title=\"Monuments in Poble Nou Cemetery\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.surfingtheplanet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2014\/02\/Monuments-in-Poble-Nou-Cemetery.jpg?strip=all&resize=1000%2C664\" alt=\"Monuments in Poble Nou Cemetery\" width=\"1000\" height=\"664\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-236\" title=\"Crypts around Poble Nou Cemetery\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.surfingtheplanet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2014\/02\/Crypts-around-Poble-Nou-Cemetery.jpg?strip=all&resize=1000%2C664\" alt=\"Crypts around Poble Nou Cemetery\" width=\"1000\" height=\"664\" \/><br \/>\nWhere the ordinary niches are found, several <strong>heroes of the common people in Barcelona<\/strong> are buried. Some of them lost their lives helping others, when the city faced major epidemics, while others fought and died for the freedom of the city. The most famous of these characters is <strong>Francesc Canals Ambr\u00f3s, \u201cel Santet\u201d<\/strong> (which means little saint). This boy coming from a poor family was well known for his goodwill and grace during his life, and became a religiously adored person, when he died so young, being only 22. His<strong> tomb<\/strong> is still <strong>frequently visited by locals<\/strong> who leave him presents to express their devotion.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-233\" title=\"Tomb of Santet in Poble Nou Cemetery\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.surfingtheplanet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2014\/02\/Tomb-of-Santet-in-Poble-Nou-Cemetery.jpg?strip=all&resize=1000%2C667\" alt=\"Tomb of Santet in Poble Nou Cemetery\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><br \/>\nAt the entrance of the Poblenou Cemetery we can <strong>take a map with us<\/strong>, which shows us the most important tombs, individual monuments and crypts. The <strong>walk takes more or less an hour<\/strong>, and we will see that many of these <strong>crypts are really a small piece of art<\/strong>, some of them not even that small.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-230\" title=\"Mausoleums in Poble Nou Cemetery\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.surfingtheplanet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2014\/02\/Mausoleums-in-Poble-Nou-Cemetery.jpg?strip=all&resize=1000%2C667\" alt=\"Mausoleums in Poble Nou Cemetery\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><br \/>\nThe itinerary finishes at a peculiar <strong>statue called \u201cThe Kiss of Death\u201d<\/strong> created by Jaume Barba, which we found impressive.\u00a0 A winged skeleton kisses a young person\u2019s face, a really powerful depiction of death.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-228\" title=\"Kiss of Death\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.surfingtheplanet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2014\/02\/Death-of-Kiss.jpg?strip=all&resize=1000%2C667\" alt=\"Kiss of Death\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><br \/>\nWe find that the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Cemetery of Poblenou<\/span> deserves an hour in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.surfingtheplanet.com\/en\/what-to-see-in-barcelona-in-3-days\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip to Barcelona<\/a>. It is really close to the beach, so after the cultural experience we can head out to the beach to enjoy the sunshine.<\/p>\n<p><em>Have you visited any interesting cemeteries in your travels?
