Even the preparation is a kind of a ritual: they <strong>make fire<\/strong> and they cook these green onions on a metal net with high flame, and when the cal\u00e7ots are cooked, they <strong>cover them with newspapers<\/strong> to keep them warm. Cooking the onions is also a social acitivity, people drink red wine together. In the meanwhile, people usually cook meat in a barbecue to have a more abundant meal.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-586\" title=\"Calcots on the fire\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.surfingtheplanet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2014\/04\/Calcots-on-the-fire.jpg?strip=all&resize=1000%2C667\" alt=\"Calcots on the fire\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" data-wp-pid=\"586\" \/><br \/>\nIf the preparation is a <strong>ritual, eating these cal\u00e7ots<\/strong> is that even more! People <strong>eat them with their hands<\/strong> and as the onions are burnt on the outside, y<strong>ou get really dirty<\/strong> by the end of the meal. This makes the cal\u00e7otada a funny event. The ritual consists of the following steps: you<strong> grab the cal\u00e7ots and peel them, you dip them\u00a0in a special sauce <\/strong>(similar to romesco sauce) and then you <strong>put them in your mouth trying not to make all your clothes dirty<\/strong>, which usually is quite challenging. The wine is drunk from a special jar called &#8220;porr\u00f3n&#8221; and drinking wine directly from that is another sure way of making your clothes dirty. It&#8217;s a lot of fun!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-587\" title=\"Eating calcots\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.surfingtheplanet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2014\/04\/Eating-calcots.jpg?strip=all&resize=1000%2C667\" alt=\"Eating calcots\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" data-wp-pid=\"587\" \/><br \/>\nAlthough restaurants offer cal\u00e7otada menus, the best way of experiencing this <strong>Catalan tradition<\/strong> is going to a barbecue place with friends.
